Candidate Conversations 2

Being a Brand Ambassador

During a recent interview, a candidate asked: “The sales role job description includes being a Brand Ambassador, but that’s all that it says. What exactly does this mean for the position responsibilities that I have to discuss in an interview?” All candidates know what these words mean separately, but when combined, they sometimes stumble and think they need to make up an answer to show how they fit the role.

A Brand Ambassador in Sales brings two key things to the interview:

First, the hiring manager is seeking a person who has a demonstrated history of learning a product or process in a previous role and can explain it succinctly. This is particularly true when the job is selling a proprietary Brand to a new market segment. They also want to know if you are a fast and competent learner and do you sound like an expert in pitching a product or process.

Second, the Ambassador component in a role means you are always representing the company as if you are an owner. The hiring manager wants to know if you can take real “ownership” in front of potential customers and create immediate and long-term genuine relationships.

So, what kind of Brand Ambassador do you want to be? Do you want to be perceived as someone just “selling something”, or do you want to be regarded as a “trusted advisor or, really, a trusted friend…this is the one that will get you hired!”
